What will cool soda the fastest in five minutes ;ice water, refrigerator, freezer, snow, salt & ice water?

Hypothesis

I hypothesize that salt and ice water will cool soda the fastest followed by ice water, followed by the freezer, followed by the refrigerator, followed by snow.

Experimental Design


I am going to conduct an experiment that will help me determine what cools soda the fastest. Since I usually drink soda at my house, my experiment will be conducted at my house. I am the only one taking part in my experiment. I have to put bottles of mountain dew in a freezer, ice water, snow, salty ice water, and the refrigerator for five minutes to see which gets the coolest the fastest. I will complete three trials to make sure I have enough data to make an accurate conclusion. I will have already printed out a data table to write my data onto. There is lots of water involved in my experiment and I don't want to damage a computer. I will take pictures of the soda before I put them in to cool, and after they’re done cooling, so that I have pictures of it and that I don't disrupt the experiment. After doing so, I will upload them to a computer, save them to a flash drive and bring that to school so I have them for my wiki page.

Procedure

  1. Get all materials.
  2. Take pictures of the Mountain Dew bottles.
  3. Place one bottle of Mountain Dew into the freezer and start the stop watch.
  4. Place a different bottle of Mountain Dew into the salty ice water and start a different stop watch.
  5. Place a different bottle of Mountain Dew into the snow and start a different stop watch.
  6. Place a different bottle of Mountain Dew into the refrigerator and start a different stop watch.
  7. Place the last bottle of Mountain Dew into the ice water and start the last stop watch.
  8. Wait for a stop watch to reach 5 minutes.
  9. Open the Mountain Dew and take the temperature of the soda.
  10. Record data.
  11. Repeat step 7-9 with all of the bottles of Mountain Dew.
  12. Take pictures of the Mountain Dew after you take their temperatures.
  13. Upload pictures onto your computer and save them onto a flash drive.
  14. Repeat steps 2-10 two more times.

1. Information: When a liquid is cooled below its freezing point but still a liquid and you take some co2 out of it then it freezes.

2. Information: Fresh water freezes at 31.7 degrees Fahrenheit

3. Information: Water has a special way it freezes and crystallizes to take up more space then when in a liquid. no other liquid does that.

Data Analysis




Results


The original purpose of this experiment was to find a reasonable way to chill soda in a short amount of time. For example its super bowl Sunday and you totally spaced and forgot you invited the whole neighborhood to your house for a party so you go out for a soda run and need to chill them within five minutes because that’s when your friends will get there.

The results of the experiment were that the salty ice water (40F) cooled the mountain dew the most in five minutes. The ice water (41.33) cooled the Mountain Dew the next coolest in five minutes, followed by the snow (42.33), freezer (50), and lastly the refrigerator (51).







Discussion


Conclusion

My hypothesis was that the salty ice water would cool Mountain Dew the most. My results did support my hypothesis. Some patterns and trends that my data showed was that most of the temperatures stayed around the same after five minutes of each trial. For example the trials I did in the freezer stayed exactly at fifty degrees Fahrenheit every time. The trials I did in the refrigerator went from forty one degrees to forty two degrees and then back to forty degrees Fahrenheit. The relationship between the independent variable (cooling method) and dependent variable (Temperature (F)) is strong. The method that cools Mountain Dew the fastest is salty ice water.
I think the test I did went amazing. Nothing went wrong and I got it done in a reasonable time. If I could improve my experiment I would make the time that the Mountain Dew sodas were cooling longer. An interesting future study might involve pressurizing soda in ice and different things to make it cold to see if it will get cooler.
